Statement on the Fiscal Year 2023 Budget

Tuesday, May 24, 2022

(Washington, DC) Today, the Council of the District of Columbia unanimously approved Mayor Bowser’s Fiscal Year 2023 spending plan – the District’s 27th consecutive balanced budget. Following the Council’s vote, the Mayor released the following statement:

“Today, with the support of the Council, we passed the most equitable budget put forth under Home Rule. This $19.5 billion budget focuses on building a stronger, more equitable, and more affordable DC. With this budget, we are addressing the very real anxieties Washingtonians have around affordability and being able to stay in DC. We are doubling down on affordable housing. Ending chronic homelessness. Creating new homeownership opportunities so more families can buy a home and build wealth. We are responding to our seniors by easing the burden of rising property taxes and investing in programs that help them stay connected and engaged, both online and in person.

“As we push to keep Washingtonians in DC, we are investing heavily in programs and resources to make every neighborhood a great place to live and work: schools, recreation centers, playgrounds, and a new indoor sports complex. Through programs like the Food Access Fund, we are investing in local entrepreneurs and creating amenities that can be enjoyed by and provide jobs for DC residents. We are also investing in a comprehensive public safety strategy to get guns off our streets and to target the people and places most likely to be involved in or affected by violence. Going forward, I will continue working with the Council to ensure we are fully funding MPD while also investing in effective violence prevention programs.

“I am proud that with this budget, we are investing in the legacies of our residents and moving forward with a plan to keep DC a city where people of all backgrounds and income levels can live and thrive. I thank the Council for approving my FY 2023 Budget.”
