Statement on the Passage of New Howard University Hospital and Redevelopment Tax Abatement Act of 2020

Tuesday, September 22, 2020

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser issued the following statement on the passage of Bill 23-778 “New Howard University Hospital and Redevelopment Tax Abatement Act of 2020.”

"Today, we are proud to help build on the legacy of Howard University and Howard’s College of Medicine, a premier medical school that produces more African American doctors than any other university in the country. For decades, Howard’s doctors and medical professionals have played a unique and important role in creating opportunity for African Americans and saving lives worldwide. The new Howard University Hospital, to be built on Georgia Avenue, will support that work, improve health outcomes for DC residents and, at this important moment in history, ensure a much-needed pipeline of African American medical professionals.

“As our nation grapples with the disparities laid bare by COVID-19, our community is answering the call to invest in the institutions and systems that will support not just a more equitable health care system, but a more equitable America.”
