(Washington, DC) Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser met with US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to discuss infrastructure projects in Washington, DC. Following the meeting, Mayor Bowser released the following statement:
“We are grateful that the Biden-Harris Administration has made improving our nation’s infrastructure a top priority. We know that President Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will be transformational for our city and cities across America and that we have a partner in Secretary Buttigieg. We share an urgency around making our transportation networks safer and more sustainable, including our roads and sidewalks, our bridges, and, of course, regional transportation hubs like Union Station.
“Together, we recognize that more connected communities are safer and healthier communities. Across the country, including here in DC, the rise in people getting killed on our roads and sidewalks has been tragic and unsettling. But we know that there are solutions. We know that it is possible to design and build safer roads so that they work better for everyone moving around our city, whether you’re walking, biking, driving, getting on a bus, using a wheelchair, on a scooter – no matter how you’re traveling. Especially in cities like DC, we are eager to not only imagine but deliver transportation networks that are more equitable, less reliant on cars, and that better support the goals and values of our residents.
“We also know that Americans who travel to and through our Nation’s Capital are eager to see the Union Station expansion project move forward. For many people, Union Station is the first place they experience when visiting Washington, DC and we all want it to be a point of pride for our city and nation. We look forward to continued collaboration with our federal partners on finally delivering a modernized Union Station.”
