(Washington, DC) – Today, following Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that she will not seek reelection as the Democratic leader, Mayor Muriel Bowser released the following statement, thanking Speaker Pelosi for her service to the 700,000 residents of Washington, DC and for being a strong voice in the District’s fight for statehood:
“Today, we celebrate and express our gratitude for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a daughter of Baltimore and a fierce champion of Washington, DC. For over 220 years, DC residents have been denied full access to our nation’s democracy. Under Speaker Pelosi’s leadership, the U.S. House of Representatives voted for the first time in history to approve DC statehood, and then did it again. Whether on statehood, COVID funding, or defending DC from outside meddling, Speaker Pelosi has always had, and we know she will continue to have, DC’s back.
“Nancy Pelosi is an American icon, the greatest Speaker in American history, and proof that you can be the strongest, savviest, and most strategic leader in the room and still lead with compassion. I am grateful for her leadership and steadfast belief in the power of the American experiment. There is no doubt she will continue to work hard for the people of San Francisco during the 118th Congress.”
