(Washington, DC)–Today marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Mayor Muriel Bowser released the following statement:

“Exactly 50 years ago today, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law after civil rights leaders–including many Washingtonians–fought to end racial discrimination at the polls. Although the journey was hard, the passion was never lost and we must continue to defend the gains we made. Today, we remember how far we have come, and how much work we need to do to ensure that every American has equal rights and full representation at all levels of government. District residents still lack equal representation. As Mayor, I will continue to fight to ensure the District is granted statehood and full representation in Congress.”
