Statement on H.R. 3325

Thursday, August 5, 2021

(Washington, DC) – Today, as Mayor Bowser joined President Biden at the White House in the signing of H.R. 3325, an act to award Congressional Gold Medals to the Metropolitan Police Department and the United States Capitol Police, the Mayor released the following statement:

“Today, we honored the courage and sacrifice of our Metropolitan Police Department officers who were called to the U.S. Capitol on January 6th to back up our federal partners, the U.S. Capitol Police; rushed there fearlessly to thwart attempts by domestic terrorists to overturn an election, putting their lives on the line to protect our democracy. We thank the Congress for acknowledging their sacrifice with Congressional Gold Medals, and we applaud Speaker Pelosi and the extraordinary leadership in the House of Representatives as well as our very own Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton for working to get to the bottom of this horrific mark on the history of country. As Mayor of Washington, DC, I couldn’t be more proud of the work that our Metropolitan Police Department did on January 6th, and the work that they continue to do every single day to protect our city.”
