Secretary Julian Castro Joins Mayor Muriel Bowser to Kick Off HUD's 50th Anniversary With Walking Tour of Shaw Neighborhood

Wednesday, May 20, 2015

On Thursday, May 21 at 11 am, US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julian Castro will join Mayor Muriel Bowser for a walking tour of Washington’s historic Shaw neighborhood. The event will serve as a kickoff for HUD’s 50th anniversary year.

HUD’s 50th Anniversary recognizes the Department’s mission to ensure that every family in America lives in a home of dignity and a neighborhood of pride. The Shaw neighborhood is one of several neighborhoods impacted by the DC riots of 1968. It now serves as an example of federal and local partnerships which have spurred revitalization in urban communities.

Since its inception in 1965, HUD has valued the role that cities have played in sparking growth for entire regions, including tribal and suburban communities. Over the past 50 years, HUD has helped millions of families become homeowners and helped to transform distressed communities into communities of opportunity.
