Media Availability: Mayor Bowser to Join Volunteers as District Prepares for Winter Weather

Tuesday, January 19, 2016

(Washington, DC) – Tomorrow at 10:30 am, Mayor Bowser with Serve DC Director Delano Hunter will join members of the District Snow Team to give out snow shovels to members of the Resident Snow Team. The all volunteer Resident Snow Team connects individuals with elderly and disabled neighbors who need assistance shoveling walkways during the winter.

So far this season, Serve DC has recruited more than 2,000 volunteers. DC residents can still volunteer for the Resident Snow Team by visiting serve.dc.gov or calling (202) 727-7925.

The District’s Snow Team has been preparing for snow since the summer.  There are 14 new 6-wheel dump trucks to salt and plow major streets and six new Ford 550s to salt and plow smaller residential streets. Additional equipment is on standby just in case a substantial snowfall is forecast, and the salt domes are filled to capacity, with more than 39,000 tons of salt. The public will be notified of the deployment plan for expected snow as information is available.

For more information about preparing one’s family, home and car for snow, go to snow.dc.gov.
