Mayor Bowser to Join Regional Leaders to Host Tax Reform Press Conference

Sunday, November 12, 2017
Coalition will Discuss Concerns with the House Tax Reform Bill

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Monday, November 13, at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will be joined by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Alexandria Mayor Allison Silberberg, National League of Cities, National Association of Counties, African American Mayors Association, and Americans Against Double Taxation (AADT) to host a tax reform press conference to discuss concerns with the current House Tax Reform bill (H.R.1) being considered in the U.S. House of Representatives. Local and federal officials are calling on Congress to preserve the State and Local Tax Exemption (SALT) deductions, as well as private activity bonds, and critical tax credits such as the New Markets Tax Credit – a tax credit that increases the flow of capital to businesses and low-income communities by providing a modest tax incentive to private investors.

Based on the data from AADT, an average family of four who owns a home and earns between $50,000 – $200,000 in the District would see an average tax increase of 28 percent or $1,442 – the highest possible increase in the nation if the H.R.1 bill is approved. By a large margin, Washingtonians are already paying the highest per capita federal tax in the nation with no voting representation in Congress.
