Mayor-Elect Muriel Bowser Issues Statement on Mayors’ Immigration Summit

Monday, December 8, 2014

(New York, NY) – Mayor-elect Muriel Bowser issued the following statement today while attending the Mayors’ Immigration Implementation Summit at Gracie Mansion in New York, NY. Hosted by NY Mayor Bill de Blasio, this is the first-ever summit with mayors from cities across the country to discuss and lay out a step-by-step implementation plan for the President’s recent executive action. Senior White House officials including Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson and White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett are in attendance. Mayors from some of the nation’s largest and most dynamic cities will also participate, including San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, and Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley:

“Mayors across the country recognize the important contributions immigrants have made in our nation’s history – and that they continue to make in our cities every day. We applaud the Obama Administration for looking to address immigration reform in a responsible and respectful way. These new policies will ensure that thousands of undocumented immigrants in the District of Columbia are given a fair shot at the American Dream. They will also help protect families, improve our economy and strengthen our nation. I look forward to working with other Mayors who are on the frontlines addressing this issue every day, to ensure the Administration’s policies succeed.”

Maria Gomez, Transition Committee Co-chair and President and CEO of Mary’s Center said, “I applaud Mayor-elect Bowser for tackling immigration reform head on. She understands that if we want the District to reach its full potential, we must have a system in place that gives more undocumented law abiding and hardworking immigrants the opportunity to succeed.”
