This week, Mayor Bowser will host several events leading up to Thursday’s historic #DCStatehood hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives. The District of Columbia has built unprecedented support for statehood, garnering a record 219 House cosponsors for Congresswoman Eleanor Norton’s bill (H.R. 51) to make Washington, DC the 51st state.

  • On Monday, Mayor Bowser will lead a parade with 51 DC veterans and fly 51-star American flags along Pennsylvania Avenue in a salute to DC statehood.
  • On Tuesday, Mayor Bowser will announce unprecedented business support for DC Statehood.
  • On Wednesday, Mayor Bowser will host a roundtable with DC veterans who are urging Congress to pass DC statehood.
  • On Thursday, Mayor Bowser will testify in favor of statehood before the House Oversight and Reform Committee, where she will call on Congress to grant the District’s 702,000 taxpaying residents, including 30,000 veterans, their full democratic rights as American citizens.
  • On Friday, Mayor Bowser will unveil DC statehood art activations in eight neighborhoods throughout DC that were included at Art All Night, the District’s free all-night arts festival.
  • On Saturday, Mayor Bowser will march for DC Statehood in the 2019 Fiesta DC Parade, celebrating Latino culture and featuring Native Latino cultural dance troupes and contemporary local groups from civic organizations, schools, and performers. Later, the Mayor will break ground on the new Banneker High School at the former Shaw Junior High School site in Ward 6.
