This week, Mayor Bowser will continue calling on the Trump Administration to end the federal government shutdown. While drawing attention to the detrimental and devastating effects the shutdown is having on hundreds of thousands of Americans, many who live and work in the DC region, the Mayor will also celebrate the resiliency of the DC community and highlight local policies that reflect DC values.
- On Monday, Mayor Bowser will kick off Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the National Action Network’s (NAN) 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Breakfast, honoring Dr. King’s legacy. After, the Mayor will join over a thousand volunteers at the City Year MLK Day of Service at Ron Brown College Preparatory High School, celebrating and advancing Dr. King’s mission of service to others. The Mayor will end the day by leading residents at the 13th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, starting at Anacostia Park on MLK Jr. Avenue, SE.
- On Tuesday, Mayor Bowser will hold a press conference at Capital Area Food Bank, marking the beginning of the second month of the partial federal government shutdown, calling for its end, and highlighting businesses, organizations, and non-profits that are stepping up to aid impacted families during these challenging times. After, the Mayor will host a meeting with the National League of Cities (NLC) Housing Task Force. Later, the Mayor will join a Georgetown University panel with other prominent women mayors to discuss infrastructure, innovation, and inclusion.
- On Wednesday, Mayor Bowser will host a second meeting with the NLC Housing Taskforce. After, the Mayor will join other mayors from across the country and demand an end to the shutdown affecting hundreds of thousands of Americans as part of the opening press conference for the 2019 United States Conference of Mayors Winter Meeting. She will then join a Food Policy Taskforce meeting. Later, Mayor Bowser, along with volunteers, will engage homeless neighbors to make them aware of the services available to them as well as execute the annual census of persons experiencing homelessness as part of her administration’s annual Point in Time Count.
- On Thursday, Mayor Bowser will join the ribbon cutting of Anacostia Organics, the first medical marijuana dispensary to open east of the river.
