Mayor Bowser to Promote Every Day Counts! As Students Return from Winter Break

Tuesday, January 2, 2018
Celebrates Jefferson Middle School Academy’s Excellence in Family Engagement, Social Emotional Learning, and Student Attendance

(Washington, DC) – On Wednesday, January 3, at 12 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser, as a part of the Every Day Counts! campaign, will celebrate Jefferson Middle School Academy’s success in creating a strong school community that welcomes students and families and encourages student attendance.

The Mayor will highlight the school community’s efforts to build positive and collaborative relationships with students and families through home visits, student-led conferences, and more, which led to its 2018 DCPS Standing Ovation award for Family Engagement. Mayor Bowser will also recognize Jefferson students who have maintained perfect attendance records for the first half of this school year.

To build on the success of Mayor Bowser’s Kids Ride Free on Metrorail initiative, Every Day Counts! is a citywide initiative to increase attendance at the District’s public schools. More than 18,000 students – one in four – in the District of Columbia are chronically absent, meaning they miss 10 percent or more of all school days. By sixth grade, missing 10 percent of the school year is strongly linked to dropping out of high school. Together, Mayor Bowser and the Every Day Counts! Task Force, spearheaded by the Deputy Mayor for Education, will increase coordination across public agencies and stakeholders, invest in data-driven strategies to increase attendance rates, and reward students and schools that improve attendance throughout the school year.
