Mayor Bowser to Participate in the 100,000 Opportunity Initiative Youth Hiring Fair and Forum

Tuesday, September 19, 2017

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Wednesday, September 20, at 9:55 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will be joined by Administration and federal officials to participate in the 100,000 Opportunities Initiative Hiring Fair and Forum, a day-long event that will include resume building, professional styling assistance, and on-the-spot interviews – including employment offers. The 100,000 Opportunity Initiative will help ensure that the District connect some of the city’s best employers with more DC youth. To participate in the 100,000 Opportunity Initiative Hiring Fair and Forum, visit 100,000 Opportunity Initiative Hiring Fair and Forum Registration.

The partnership between the Bowser Administration and the 100,000 Opportunities Initiative will continue to connect youth to job opportunities across the city. Having served more than 12,000 youth this year, DC was chosen as a partner city because of its vibrant and inclusive workforce, and focus on youth employment and training programs such as the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program, Solar Works DC, and access to global companies.

In 2015, Mayor Bowser introduced legislation to serve 22-24 year olds for the first time in the history of the summer youth employment program, and this year, DC Council approved legislation to permanently expand the program, making all District youth ages 14-24 eligible to participate.

Since January 2015, the unemployment rate in Washington, DC has dropped by 1.1 percentage points, including decreases in all eight wards. Under the Bowser Administration, nearly 22,300 residents secured employment; 994 residents were employed through DOES workforce programs; 897 residents, who received training through DOES, gained employment; and a total of 24,853 youth participated in DOES programs in FY 2016 – FY 2017.
