Mayor Bowser Meets with Automotive Technology Company in Israel on Road Safety Strategies

Tuesday, June 25, 2019

(JERUSALEM, ISRAEL) – Today, Mayor Bowser, joined by Councilmembers Anita Bonds and Brandon Todd, visited with executives of Mobileye, an Intel company and a global leader in the development of safety technology for automakers, to gain insight on strategies for improving road safety in Washington, DC. During the visit, Mayor Bowser and the Councilmembers rode in an autonomous vehicle.

“As a tech-savvy city that is growing and thriving, it is critical that we prepare for a future with autonomous vehicles on our roads,” said Mayor Bowser. “We welcome the opportunity to meet and collaborate with Mobileye on innovative solutions for road safety.”

Mobileye develops machine learning, mapping technologies, data analysis, and more for autonomous driving solutions, identifying road hazards such as potholes and dangerous intersections. Its technology is being utilized in 41 million vehicles by automakers such as BMW, Ford, Honda, General Motors, and others.

In February 2018, Mayor Bowser established the Autonomous Vehicles Working Group to proactively prepare the District for AV technologies and ensure that AV deployment will benefit District residents and visitors. The working group is comprised of District agencies focused on transportation, disability rights, environmental issues, and public safety. In October 2018, she announced a partnership with Ford Motor Company and the DC Infrastructure Academy to train DC residents for jobs and careers in the autonomous vehicle industry.
