Mayor Bowser to Mark the First Step Toward a $15 Minimum Wage

Thursday, June 29, 2017
Highlights Milestone Under the Fair Shot Minimum Wage Amendment Act of 2016

(Washington, DC) – On Friday, June 30, at 10 am., Mayor Muriel Bowser will mark the first increase to minimum wage under the #Fightfor15 legislation that she introduced in 2016. Effective July 1, 2017, the minimum wage for District workers will increase from $11.50 per hour to $12.50 per hour, and the minimum wage for tipped workers will increase from $2.77 per hour to $3.33 per hour. This is the first raise for tipped workers in the last 12 years.

Last year, the Mayor signed the Fair Shot Minimum Wage Amendment Act of 2016 into law to raise the District’s minimum wage to $15.00 per hour by 2020. Under the law, minimum wage will progressively rise to $15.00 per hour by July 1, 2020, and then will increase each successive year starting in 2021.

Since coming into office, Mayor Bowser has made leading more Washingtonians on pathways to the middle class a top priority. Since 2015, the District’s unemployment rate has dropped 1.6 percentage points and total jobs have risen by 34,100.
