Mayor Bowser Launches PaveDC, Encourages Residents to Participate in a Spring Cleanup in Celebration of Earth Day

Wednesday, April 20, 2022
Fifth PaveDC campaign since 2018 and spring clean-up campaign in all eight wards

(Washington, DC) Today, at Mayor Bowser’s Community Walk in Ward 5, the Mayor launched the fifth PaveDC campaign since 2018, part of her Administration’s plan to eliminate all roads in poor condition by 2024. The Mayor also encouraged residents to join the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs on Saturday, April 23 at one of eight spring cleanups happening in celebration of Earth Day. With cleanups happening in all eight wards, District employees, local businesses, and residents will come together to pick up trash and beautify neighborhoods.

Now that the sun is out and warmer weather is here, that means two things – time to pave the roads and time for our citywide spring cleanups,” said Mayor Bowser. “I encourage residents to participate in both. Participate in the PaveDC campaign by submitting your service requests to 311, and sign up to join one of the spring cleanups happening in all eight wards this Saturday.”

Improving roadways remains a top priority in Mayor Bowser’s FY 2023 Fair Shot Budget. Among the Mayor’s budget proposals are a $422 million investment into the District’s local roadways, alleys, and sidewalks to ensure they are safe, reliable, and functional and a $200 million investment over six years for longer-term streetscape projects to redesign the city’s most dangerous roads and intersections.

“With Mayor Bowser’s support and commitment to long term investments in infrastructure, we look forward to kicking off this paving season and ensuring we do all we can to create a safer, stronger DC,” said DDOT Director Everett Lott.

DDOT’s PaveDC plan includes roadway resurfacing, sidewalk restoration, alley restoration, and markings improvements. The PaveDC website includes an interactive map of DDOT’s work plans for users to track the agency’s progress.

This paving season, DDOT anticipates closing approximately 900 roadway repair service requests, 1,400 requests for sidewalk repair, and 400 alley repair requests. As part of the selection process criteria for the Paving Plan, DDOT looks at pavement condition index data, open service requests, work orders, the use of the road, and existing internal and external projects that could serve as conflict.

With the completion of 2022 Paving Plan and since the program’s launch in 2018, DDOT will have resurfaced more than 470 miles of District roads, or 46.2% of the network. DDOT’s PaveDC Team was previously recognized for its work on this program, winning the 2021 Cafritz Team Award.

Residents can submit service requests regarding a street in their neighborhood by visiting 311.dc.gov.

The District-wide spring cleaning campaign comes on the heels of Earth Day. All cleanups will begin at 10 am.
