Friday, September 8, 2017
Under the 2017-2022 Capital Commitment, DC Public Schools Will Strive to Become a District of Excellence and Equity

(Washington, DC) – On Saturday, September 9, at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will announce DC Public Schools (DCPS) five-year strategic plan to increase college and career readiness, accelerate early literacy, increase high school graduation rates, improve student experiences, and increase excellency in schools. The Mayor will also highlight the progress DCPS has made after ten years of education reform, including increases in graduation rates, enrollments, and student achievements. The plan is the first in the tenure of Chancellor Antwan Wilson who has instituted a focus on social emotional learning.

Following the announcement, Mayor Bowser will host DCPS’ Back-to-School Block Party to celebrate the 2017-2018 School Year. The block party will include special guest Magic Johnson - Chairman and Chief Executive of Magic Johnson Enterprises, opportunities to learn more about the future of DCPS, and hands-on activities for students to enjoy.

Since the beginning of the 2017-2018 School Year, Mayor Bowser opened the modernized school campuses at Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Marie Reed Elementary in Wards 2 and 1; implemented middle school investments, including a new archery program at Stuart Hobson Middle School in Ward 6; and announced a new high school Career Academy and the beginnings of a new middle school at Calvin Coolidge Senior High School in Ward 4.

As part of her work to accelerate education reform, Mayor Bowser invested $1.74 billion in public education, an increase of $121 million over last year’s budget and the largest investment ever in Washington, DC. Last month, Mayor Bowser announced a tentative agreement with the Washington Teachers Union that would add $110.5 million to DC public schools and $92.6 million to public charter schools in FY2017 – FY2021.
