Mayor Bowser to Launch District’s First Ever Transitional Housing Program that Combines Employment and Housing Services

Tuesday, December 19, 2017
Cutting-Edge Program Selects DC Residents Facing Multiple Barriers to Employment

(Washington, DC) – On Wednesday, December 20, at 11 am, Mayor Bowser will launch the Transitional Residential Program (TRP) and cut the ribbon to formally open the program’s first facility. She will be joined by Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity Courtney Snowden and Director of the Department of Employment Services (DOES) Odie Donald II.

The Transitional Residential Program was created to provide transitional housing opportunities to District residents who have participated in DOES’ DC Career Connections, Project Empowerment or Aspire to Entrepreneurship programs, and are employed in full-time unsubsidized jobs or earning a sustainable wage through a small business venture.

Those chosen for the program have multiple barriers to employment including previous incarceration, substance abuse history, homelessness, educational deficits, and family disconnection. With many housing initiatives geared towards families, the Transitional Residential Program will specifically serve single adults in the District as single adult residents are often challenged by issues of homelessness. The TRP initiative supports Mayor Bowser’s Homeward DC strategic plan that makes homelessness rare, brief, and nonrecurring in the District.
