Mayor Bowser to Launch DC Infrastructure Academy

Highlights DC Works Week to Ensure a Fair Shot for All Residents

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Tuesday, September 5, at 10:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will sign a memorandum of intent to launch the DC Infrastructure Academy, an innovative workforce training program that will provide hands-on experience and access for residents to secure long-term employment in the infrastructure industry, which is currently experiencing a gap between open positions and available workers to occupy them. In 2016, the District’s infrastructure sector included 6,721 job positions; 2,500 job openings with only 1,246 hires, representing a shortage of nearly 50 percent; and sustained an average hourly wage of $48.45. By year 2021, the District’s infrastructure sector will increase by 11 percent and almost 20 percent by year 2026.

The launch of the DC Infrastructure Academy will kick off DC Works Week, a combined effort to highlight workforce programs from the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity (DMGEO) and the Department of Employment Services (DOES). Celebrating the impact of groundbreaking employers and community stakeholders in shaping the District’s workforce system, DC Works Week will continue Mayor Bowser’s efforts to provide equal economic opportunities for all Washingtonians to have a fair shot and maintain their pathways to the middle class.
