Mayor Bowser to Launch 2017-2018 School Year, Participate in Slow Down Campaign

Sunday, August 20, 2017

(Washington, DC) On Monday, August 21, at 9 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will celebrate the first day of the 2017-2018 School Year at the newly modernized Marie Reed Elementary School in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. Mayor Bowser will highlight the dual language school and the citywide effort to increase student attendance across Washington, DC.

As part of the Every Day Counts! Tour, Mayor Bowser will continue to spread the word about the importance of attending school every day. School attendance is a key predictor of student achievement, and in DC, approximately one out of every four students is chronically absent (missing 10 percent or more of the school year).

The Mayor will also participate in the Slow Down Campaign, a collaborative effort to remind motorists to drive safely during the school year. In the morning, Mayor Bowser will be reminding drivers to slow down at the intersection of Florida Avenue and 18th Street, NW, near Marie Reed Elementary School and Oyster-Adams Bilingual School’s Intermediate Campus in Ward 1. In the afternoon, the Mayor will be at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Albemarle Street, NW, near Janney Elementary School; Alice Deal Middle School; and Woodrow Wilson High School.

Since 2015, the Bowser Administration continues to accelerate education reform in the District. In her Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Budget, Mayor Bowser invested $1.74 billion in public education, an increase of $121 million over last year’s budget and the largest investment ever in Washington, DC. Mayor Bowser’s proposed contract agreement with the Washington Teachers Union will add $110.5 million to DC public schools and $92.6 million to public charter schools FY2017-FY2021.
