(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Leif Dormsjo kicked off the first-ever “AlleyPalooza,” a campaign that will repair or renovate 64 alleys throughout the District - eight in each of the District’s eight wards over the summer.
“The District’s alleys are a vital, yet often overlooked piece of our city’s infrastructure,” Mayor Bowser said. “We want our roads to be safe and reliable and our alleys to reflect the quality of our neighborhoods – and AlleyPalooza shows our commitment to making that happen.”
The District has more than 350 miles of alleys, and DDOT receives several hundred service requests for alleys each year. Alley work is selected based on community feedback including 311 calls and a review by DDOT engineers. The new program, which runs through mid-September, demonstrates the Bowser Administration’s commitment to improving the District’s infrastructure.
“AlleyPalooza demonstrates a focus on the city’s infrastructure needs in all eight wards and dedicates approximately $3.7 million to repairing or reconstructing alleys to make them dependable for drivers and residents,” said DDOT Director Dormsjo. “Now we have extra crews out doing this vital work. Be patient with us during the process; you will like the results.”
AlleyPalooza builds on the successes of the District’s PotholePalooza, the District’s annual “War on Potholes” that takes place every Spring. This year, DDOT utilized new technologies and strategies to effectively identify and repair potholes across all eight wards. DDOT has already filled nearly 32,000 potholes across the District this year.
