(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser kicked off DC Values Week and highlighted how residents can help keep the community safe while taking part in exciting events that represent DC values. The Mayor and District officials also provided information about preparations and road closures for several upcoming special events and also encouraged residents and visitors to use Metro and other forms of public transportation to get around the city this weekend.
“We have a lot of exciting events coming up, and a lot of opportunities to celebrate our DC values,” said Mayor Bowser. “Let’s work together to have fun, to keep each other and our community safe, and to celebrate the people and values that make DC the greatest city in the world.”
Throughout DC Values Week, the District will light up the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in celebration of upcoming events: on Friday, the bridge will be lit up orange in support of common sense gun reform; on Saturday and Sunday, the bridge will be lit up rainbow for Pride; on Monday, the bridge will be lit up multi-color to represent flags of the world, in celebration of Immigrant Heritage Month; and on Tuesday, the bridge will be lit up red and white for Flag Day and to represent DC’s ongoing fight for statehood.
Residents are encouraged to visit alert.dc.gov and sign up to receive real-time alerts, ranging from street closures to public safety notifications. Residents can also follow @AlertDC on Twitter. Residents and visitors are reminded that if they see something, say something by reporting emergencies, threats, and suspicious activity to 911.
