Mayor Bowser to Kick Off 46th Year of Iconic Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program

Sunday, June 22, 2025
Summer jobs program to serve approximately 13,000 young people at sites across DC

(Washington, DC) – On Monday, June 23 at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will officially kick off the 2025 Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP). The iconic program, now in its 46th year, is one of the largest and longest-running summer youth employment programs in the nation, offering critical career development opportunities for District youth and ensuring that they are productively engaged throughout the summer months. This summer, more than 13,000 young people, ages 14 to 24, will participate in the program, and more than 700 organizations have registered as host employers.

For younger DC residents, the Career Ready Early Scholars Program (CRESP) enters its third year this summer. CRESP provides youth ages 9 to 13 a chance to engage in comprehensive college and career exploration programming, offering diverse and hands-on experience during the summer.

This summer, thousands of MBSYEP participants will also take part in a citywide service project — a partnership between the Department of Employment Services and the Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism and Partnerships. Participants will write letters to members of the military and their families, and senior citizens, sharing words of gratitude, encouragement, and support.

The MBSYEP kickoff will take place at Trinity University in the Payden Academic Center. Carolina Canyon has hosted MBSYEP participants at Trinity since 2021 and CRESP participants since the program’s inception in 2023. This year the site is also hosting Pathways to Finance and a literacy program, with 250 youth on-site across all four programs.
