Friday, February 20, 2015

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser joined US Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx at Union Station to highlight the importance of investing in our nation’s infrastructure and creating safer streets for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. The event concluded Secretary Foxx’s GROW AMERICA Express bus tour and kicked off the ‘Vision Zero’ initiative which aims to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries through planning, education and enforcement.

“Today, I am committed to taking a leadership role to help to improve pedestrian and bicycle transportation safety by officially adding the District of Columbia to the US Department of Transportation’s Mayors’ Challenge for Safer People and Safer Streets,” said Mayor Bowser. “We are taking our first step towards realizing a ‘Vision Zero’ where no lives are lost on our streets or at our intersections.”

The Mayors' Challenge for Safer People and Safer Streets aims to improve pedestrian and bicycle transportation safety by showcasing effective local actions, empowering local leaders to take action, and promoting partnerships to advance pedestrian and bicycle safety.

The event was hosted at Union Station, built over 100 years ago, which is as a major transportation, cultural and economic hub for the District of Columbia. It serves nearly 70,000 travelers each day.
