(Washington, DC) Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser joined President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to participate in a service day project at the Jobs Have Priority Naylor Road Program (JHP NRP), a temporary family housing facility for families in Southeast. In honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, President Obama, First Lady Obama, and Mayor Bowser partnered with families to paint a mural in the building's community room. Called the "Wall of Hope," the mural includes a painting of Martin Luther King Jr. surrounded by pre-stenciled butterflies and words of hope.
The site is the new home for the First Family's playground set, which was moved from The White House South Lawn and donated to JHP NRP in December of 2016.
“It is an honor to join the President and First Lady Obama to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King in service to our most vulnerable residents,” said Mayor Bowser. “I am grateful to the Obama family for their ongoing support of Washington, DC. We all must continue to honor Dr. King through our deeds and actions. In a city as prosperous as ours, we should judge ourselves by how we help those with the most need.”
