Mayor Bowser to Host a Reunion with Seniors Displaced by Arthur Capper Fire and First Responders, Marines Who Assisted in the Rescue Effort

Wednesday, October 3, 2018
Ahead of a Private Luncheon to Thank the Community and Residents, Mayor will Mingle with Former Apartment Residents to Discuss their Health and Well-Being and Remind Residents of Available District Resources

(Washington, DC) – On Thursday, October 4, at 12 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser will meet and greet with seniors displaced by the devastating fire at the Arthur Capper Senior Apartments. This gathering is an opportunity for the Mayor to hear directly from residents about their transition after the fire as well as a chance for residents to reconnect with neighbors and friends from Arthur Capper. Seniors will also be reunited with some of #DCsBravest from DC Fire and EMS, the nearby Marine Barracks, and other members of the community who helped with evacuations during the fire. Members of the community and non-profit organizations who have been helping the residents since the fire have also been invited to participate.

On Wednesday, September 19, 2018, a three-alarm fire broke out at the Arthur Capper Senior Apartments in Southeast Washington, DC.  Mayor Bowser was on the scene throughout that evening and in the days which followed, driving the Administration’s multi-agency response ensuring those affected had all medical needs met, were placed in transitional housing, were connected to trauma-informed care resources, and were able to get all vital documents replaced. The Department of Human Services and the Office on Aging have remained the lead agencies in this effort. They have matched each Arthur Capper household to a dedicated case manager and continue to work with residents and their families as they move to permanent housing.
