Mayor Bowser to Host DC’s Second National Maternal and Infant Health Summit

Monday, September 9, 2019
Health Professionals, Activists, Parents, and Public Officials to Discuss and Promote Solutions to Improve the Lives and Health of Mothers, Infants, and Families

(Washington, DC) – On Tuesday, September 10, at 9 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will host the District’s second National Maternal and Infant Health Summit. Mayor Bowser is bringing together a vibrant list of speakers and leaders to address a community audience and develop an agenda that tackles the disproportionally high rates of maternal mortality experienced by people of color – in both Washington, DC and across the nation.

Mayor Bowser will provide welcome remarks and participate in the keynote luncheon panel moderated by WUSA9’s Lesli Foster and featuring actress and activist Alyssa Milano.

The summit, free and open to the public, is an opportunity for elected officials, health officials, and DC residents to explore strategies to improve perinatal health and address racial disparities in birth outcomes. The event will feature panel discussions focused on centering the narratives of mothers, including conversations on early exposures, food policy, and the role of fathers in perinatal health and early education. The event will include a health and early education expo, held parallel to the formal program, that will allow participants to access service providers and resources regarding health, early education, and childcare by visiting individual tables. The Summit will also include breakout sessions on topics ranging from nutrition and home-visiting to midwifery and maternal mental health.
