Mayor Bowser to Highlight Administration’s Efforts to Prevent New Cases of HIV

Monday, June 26, 2017
2016 was the 9th Consecutive Year of Decreases in New HIV Cases

(Washington, DC) – On Tuesday, June 27, at 11 am., Mayor Muriel Bowser will highlight her Administration’s efforts to decrease the number of newly diagnosed HIV cases in Washington, DC. In 2016, new cases of HIV decreased to 347 – a 52 percent decline from 720 cases since 2011, and a 73 percent decline from 1,333 cases since 2007. The Mayor will also announce “UequalsU” (Undetectable equals Untransmittable), a new campaign to ensure that all residents infected with HIV take their medications on a regular basis. The daily routine will suppress the virus until it becomes undetectable, prohibiting the transmission of HIV.

As a part of Back to Basics DC, an effort to highlight the day-to-day work that keeps the District moving forward, the Mayor will continue to recognize the work of DC government employees, showcase innovations in service delivery, and share information about how the community can help the government keep Washington, DC a great place to call home.
