Mayor Bowser to Highlight 2017-2018 School Year Investments in DC Public Middle Schools

Wednesday, August 23, 2017
Site Visit to Stuart-Hobson Middle School Continues the Every Day Counts! Tour

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Thursday, August 24, at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will discuss her Administration’s efforts to expand programming at DC public middle schools. This school year, every DC public middle school will offer additional algebra and STEM courses, such as engineering, biomedical, and computer science; and every middle school student in DC Public Schools (DCPS) will have the option to participate in at least one extracurricular program including computer coding clubs, new athletic programs, and performing arts courses.

Mayor Bowser will continue the Every Day Counts! Tour to discuss the importance of attending school every day at Stuart-Hobson Middle School. School attendance is a key predictor of student achievement, and in DC, approximately one out of every four students is chronically absent (missing 10 percent or more of the school year). On the recently released 2016-2017 PARCC Assessment, students at Stuart-Hobson saw significant gains. The percentage of students who scored at a level four or five, indicating that they are on track for the next grade level or prepared to graduate high school for success in college and/or a career, increased by 14.6 percent in English language arts (ELA) and 6.1 percent in math.

Since 2015, the Bowser Administration continues to accelerate education reform in the District. In her Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Budget, Mayor Bowser invested $1.74 billion in public education, an increase of $121 million over last year’s budget and the largest investment ever in Washington, DC. Mayor Bowser’s proposed contract agreement with the Washington Teachers Union will increase the Uniform Per Student Funding Formula by 5.9 percent and $110.5 million to DC public schools  from FY2017 to FY2021.
