Mayor Bowser to Dedicate New Mural on Historic Tenleytown Building

Friday, October 13, 2017

(Washington, DC) – On Saturday, October 14, at 11:15 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will participate in a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony of a new mural commissioned through a Public Art Building Communities grant, which was provided by DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH). Entitled “Celebrating Tenleytown’s History: Past and Present,” the new mural will be install on the south wall of Han Cleaners – the oldest commercial building in the District.

The mural is the result of a collaboration between Jarrett Ferrier, a DC-based mural artist, and Stephen Voss, a DC-based photographer. During the planning process, Mr. Voss, who is also the grantee and project coordinator, worked closely with representatives of the local community, DC-based artists, and Ward 3 Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners to determine appropriate placement and subjects represented.

The Public Art Building Communities grant is available for the design, fabrication, and installation of temporary or permanent public artwork such as sculptures, mosaics, murals, paving patterns, custom benches, and artistic railings to enhance neighborhoods across the city. Earlier this week, Mayor Bowser and CAH announced $11,598,016 in grant awards that will support arts and humanities projects in all eight wards, and last month, Mayor Bowser celebrated 202Creates – a month-long showcase of the city’s diverse and vibrant creative community. Home to 2,400 arts-related businesses, Washington, DC ranks first in creative businesses per capita, and the District’s creative economy generates more than 120,000 jobs, with 1,800 creative jobs added in just the last year.
