Mayor Bowser to Cut Ribbon at University of the District of Columbia Community College-Bertie Backus Campus' Auditorium

Monday, August 28, 2017

On Tuesday, August 29, at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will celebrate the opening of the new auditorium at the University of the District of Columbia Community College (UDC-CC)-Bertie Backus Campus in Ward 5. The nearly 70,000 square-foot renovated facility includes high-quality classrooms; two multi-use flex labs; office and support spaces; high-efficiency heating and cooling systems; and new audio visual and lighting systems. The Bertie Backus Campus is home to UDC-CC’s practical nursing, nursing assistant, home health aide, architectural engineering, fashion merchandising, and construction management degree programs.

Since 2015, the Bowser Administration has made critical investments in UDC to increase educational opportunities for all residents. Earlier this year, Mayor Bowser announced the University of the District of Columbia Workforce Edge Partnership (UDC-WE), a dual-track community college program that allows adult learners enrolled in DC public charter high schools to receive workforce training skills, while earning their high school diploma or GED. In 2016, the Mayor also announced the District of Columbia Partnership (DC-UP), a collaborative initiative that will provide four-year scholarships and housing stipends to the Valedictorians and Salutatorians of DC Public Schools and DC Public Charter Schools. This fall, 42 DC-UP scholars are planning to attend UDC-CC, including the Bertie-Backus Campus.
