Mayor Bowser to Cut Ribbon on Newly Constructed West Elementary School and Newly Modernized Eaton Elementary School

Wednesday, August 25, 2021

(Washington, DC) – On Thursday, August 26, at 11:30 am and 3 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Public Schools Chancellor Lewis D. Ferebee will join community members to cut the ribbon on the newly constructed West Elementary School and the newly modernized Eaton Elementary School.

Earlier this year, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a proposal to rename West Elementary School to John Lewis Elementary School, honoring the legacy of the longtime congressman and champion of civil and human rights. The renaming requires DC Council approval and could go into effect during the 2021-2022 School Year should the Council introduce and approve legislation.

Since taking office in 2016, Mayor Bowser’s has invested in the modernization of 26 DC Public Schools, and has committed more than $1.3 billion over the next six years for continued modernization of DCPS schools. In addition to West and Eaton Elementary Schools, three modernized schools will open this fall, providing DC Public Schools students with world-class facilities to learn and thrive in.
