On Tuesday, December 12, at 11:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will cut the ribbon at the new mixed-use development on the site of the former Hine Junior High School, now 700 Penn, the Residences at Eastern Market, and 770 C Street, SE. She will be joined by Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Brian Kenner and Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen.
Led by the Office of Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development and developed by EastBanc and Stanton Development, the Hine School project is a four-building development with affordable and market rate housing, office space, retail, a grocery store, below-grade parking and an outdoor plaza.
Located adjacent to the historic Eastern Market, the new development includes 162 housing units – 46 affordable with 17 dedicated for seniors; 160,000 square feet of office space including the Yard, a new co-working space; 60,000 square feet of retail space that includes local retailers, a preschool and a Trader Joe’s; and an outdoor plaza – home of the weekend flea markets, Capitol Hill Flea Market (Saturday) and The Flea Market at Eastern Market (Sunday).
Since coming into office, the Bowser Administration has sparked the creation or preservation of more than 9,600 affordable units, with another 3,300 units in preconstruction. In Fiscal Year 2017, the District made historic investments in affordable housing, getting more than $138 million in Housing Production Trust Fund financing out the door to support 23 projects that will produce or preserve more than 1,900 affordable units. In September, the District was recognized for its multi-pronged approach to housing production and preservation, homeownership, and development of vacant properties when it was selected for the Urban Land Institute’s Larson Housing Policy Leadership Award.
