Initiative Supports Statehood Educational Efforts and Creates Corporate Council, Increasing Awareness Around the Benefits of Statehood to the Business Community

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, Mayor Bowser applauded the Federal City Council’s (FCC) announcement to engage the local business community and launch an educational initiative on Statehood for Washington, DC. Through the establishment of this initiative and the creation of a Corporate Council, the FCC and its participating members will elevate efforts to drive awareness and action around the important issue of Statehood and its benefits to residents and business owners across the District.

“With momentum at an all-time high for Statehood and a rapidly changing environment in both the private and federal sectors, it is in the best interest of our local business community to achieve Statehood for Washington, DC,” said Mayor Bowser. “I applaud the FCC for their leadership and stepping up to help educate on the current status of the District and how that affects the business community, which will complement the ongoing efforts of the New Columbia Statehood Commission, grassroots organizations, as well as our new Statehood Office.”

Since taking office in 2015, Mayor Bowser has made the fight for Statehood one of her top priorities. To date, Mayor Bowser has met with President Donald Trump, the leadership of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, including House Speakers, Majority and Minority Leaders, as well as the leadership of various Committees—all to discuss Statehood. Under the Mayor’s leadership, a Statehood team focuses on increasing awareness of Washington, DC’s Statehood efforts, and how it can benefit not only the residents of Washington, DC, but the nation as a whole.
