Mayor Bowser Celebrates Opening of Fort Totten Retail Corridor at Walmart Supercenter

Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser joined Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd, community leaders and residents to celebrate the long-anticipated grand opening of the Walmart Supercenter, the third Walmart in the District of Columbia. This Walmart is part of Fort Totten Square, a $120 million mixed-use development that also will deliver 345 apartments, 10,000 square feet of additional retail space and 750 parking spaces in 2015.
 
This project delivers on Mayor Bowser’s commitment to community-oriented development, as Walmart has pledged to serve residents by creating local jobs, improving District families’ access to healthy food options, and to develop charitable partnerships in DC.

“The Fort Totten Walmart is a big deal for the District and a great addition to the community,” said Mayor Bowser. “The store will provide the community with access to products and services, and will create jobs for District residents.  With Walmart as an anchor, Fort Totten Square is on a path to strengthen this neighborhood and create pathways to the middle class.”

Walmart has hired over 400 full and part-time associates to work at the 120,000 square foot Fort Totten location. 290 of those are District residents, which already includes 50 Ward 4 residents and 25 Ward 5 residents. In total, Walmart’s three DC locations generate approximately $6.4 million in annual tax revenues to the District of Columbia – money that can be invested back into the District to meet the growing needs of residents and neighborhoods.

In an effort to address community traffic and safety concerns, the intersection of Riggs Road, NE and South Dakota Avenue, NE where the Walmart sits has been upgraded with $10 million in infrastructure and safety improvements.

As Councilmember in 2013 – and former ANC commissioner for the area – Mayor Bowser fought to move this development forward and helped break ground on this transformative project.
