Mayor Bowser to Celebrate New Banneker Academic High School with Back-to-School Community Event

Friday, August 27, 2021

(Washington, DC) – On Saturday, August 28, at 11:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will cut the ribbon on the new Benjamin Banneker Academic High School in Ward 6. As part of the event, the Mayor will host a back-to-school community celebration with free food, fun, music, and giveaways.

The $152 million renovation, which includes a high school-sized gym, up-to-date science labs, and modern technology, will allow the District to expand access to Banneker to additional students from all eight wards.

As part of the event, DC Health will offer free, on-site COVID-19 vaccinations from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. DC youth ages 12-17 who receive their first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine at the event will have the opportunity to receive a $51 VISA Gift card or, while supplies last, a pair of AirPods. Parents or guardians who bring their children to one of these three sites are also eligible to receive one $51 VISA gift card per child vaccinated.
