Mayor Bowser to Celebrate the First Day of the 2017 Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program

Sunday, June 25, 2017
Announce $50,000 worth of scholarships toward post-secondary education, military or occupational training

On Monday, June 26, at 11:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will celebrate the first day of the Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP). Nearly 13,000 participants, ages 14-24, will begin a six-week summer youth employment program at hundreds of private or public sectors and government worksites across Washington, DC. MBSYEP participants will gain meaningful experience through summer internships, professional development workshops, and enrichment activities. In 2015, Mayor Bowser extended the program to include young adults ages 22-24, and this year, the program will be permanently expanded to include youth up to age 24.

The Mayor will also announce a new initiative to put more young people on the pathway to the middle class. The Administration will select 25 MBSYEP participants to each receive a $2,000 scholarship towards post-secondary education, military, or occupational training. Scholarships will be awarded at the 2017 MBSYEP Closing Ceremony at Eastern Senior High School on Friday, August 4, 2017.

As a part of Back to Basics DC, an effort to highlight the day-to-day work that keeps the District moving forward, the Mayor will continue to recognize the work of DC government employees, showcase innovations in service delivery, and share information about how the community can help the government keep Washington, DC a great place to call home.
