Mayor Bowser to Celebrate Completion of the Garrison Elementary School Playground and Multipurpose Field

Wednesday, December 12, 2018

(Washington, DC) – On Thursday, December 13, at 2:45 p.m., Mayor Muriel Bowser and Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans will celebrate the completion of an $8 million investment in a community playground and field at Garrison Elementary School, which is the second phase of the $25 million Garrison Elementary School modernization project. In August 2017, the Bowser Administration completed the first phase of the Garrison Elementary School modernization project, which provided a safe learning environment that is universally-accessible for students from pre-school to fifth grade. In September 2018, the Bowser Administration, led by the Department of Parks and Recreations and Department of General Services, completed the second phase of the Garrison modernization project with the addition of a community playground and field.

The new community playground and field includes an early childhood playground area, a playground space for kindergarten through fifth grades, state-of-the-art play equipment, dedicated outdoor classroom space, bio-retention designs, a basketball court, and an athletic field with space for baseball, soccer, and a running track. In addition, the playground features a public art sculpture titled “Inspire” and benches donated and fabricated by Urban Forestry for the outdoor classroom.

Since 2015, the Bowser Administration has fully or partially modernized 20 schools, including Garrison Elementary. Through these modernizations, Mayor Bowser has focused on building top-quality learning environments for our students and educators to make every day count and building equity across the District.
