(Washington, DC) On Friday, June 13 at 2 pm Mayor Muriel Bowser, District officials, educators, and school community members will break ground on a new 21,000-square-foot addition at Barnard Elementary School in Ward 4. The $22 million project will eliminate the need for temporary trailers, unify the student body under one roof, and expand access to modern, inclusive learning environments.
Designed to better serve students and educators, the addition will include 12 general education classrooms, a hands-on “Specials Lab,” dedicated special education spaces, and sustainability features such as a green roof, a new playfield, and bioretention ponds. The project reflects Mayor Bowser’s continued commitment to building high-quality learning facilities that strengthen neighborhoods and support student success.
Mayor Bowser’s FY26 Budget, Grow DC, invests in school facilities citywide, including $2 billion for 30 school modernizations, $148 million for small capital improvements such as HVAC, window replacements, and athletic field upgrades, and $10.7 million to replace and modernize school technology and IT infrastructure.
