Mayor Bowser to Break Ground on Short-Term Family Housing

Groundbreaking Signals Critical Step Forward in Closing DC General

(Washington, DC) – On Thursday, July 6, at 10:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will break ground on the first Short-Term Family Housing building in the District. This groundbreaking marks a critical step in the Administration’s effort to close and replace DC General Family Shelter with dignified, service-enriched programs across all eight wards. The facility will include 45 family units; 20 bathrooms; laundry rooms; a basketball court; a playground; and a courtyard.

For over two years, Mayor Bowser has made an unprecedented $100 million annual investment into the Housing Production Trust Fund. The Administration has constructed and preserved over 1,000 affordable housing units; helped more than 3,000 families avoid DC homeless services system; and connected more than 1,800 veterans to permanent housing. In 2015, the Mayor launched Homeward DC, the District’s five-year strategic plan to prevent and end homelessness. In the plan's first full year of implementation, the District has seen a 10.5 percent reduction in overall homelessness; 22 percent reduction among families experiencing homelessness; 15 percent reduction among veterans experiencing homelessness; and a three percent reduction among individuals experiencing homelessness.
