(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Tuesday, February 13, at 12 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser, as part of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Douglass, will highlight her Administration’s historic investment in infrastructure and break ground on the new Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge Project. Construction of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge is part of the South Capitol Street Corridor Project, the largest public infrastructure project in the history of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). The project includes replacement of the 68-year-old Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and reconstruction of the Suitland Parkway/I-295 interchange. The new Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge is a prime example of a strong federal-local funding partnership, with federal grants that make up the majority of funding matched by over $250 million in local taxpayer dollars. The Bowser Administration is hopeful the federal infrastructure plan being proposed in Congress will expand this direct federal funding to cities and counties to repair and modernize streets, bridges, roads, affordable housing, and public transportation, with a continued Federal commitment to WMATA.
The South Capitol Street Corridor Project will be completed in two phases, and it is one of several projects comprising the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative (AWI).
