Mayor Bowser to Break Ground on the Modernization of Calvin Coolidge Senior High School

Thursday, August 31, 2017

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On September 1, at 4 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser will break ground on the modernization of Calvin Coolidge Senior High School in Ward 4. The $163 million modernization project will include upgrades to the Frank Williams Center; high-quality sound systems and lighting in the auditorium; installation of new windows, electrical and HVAC systems; and two new atriums with skylights, which will be designated for arts and dining needs. The modernization project will also include the construction of a new middle school in Ward 4.

This year, Coolidge launched the Health Sciences Career Academy to develop a pipeline of students with the skills and experiences they need to pursue health-related degrees and professions. Students will have access to rigorous health and science courses, college tours and other trips to gain hands-on experience in the field, and academic support. The renovation of Coolidge will include state-of-the-art spaces for the Health Sciences Career Academy and mass media program.

As part of her work to accelerate education reform, Mayor Bowser invested $1.74 billion in public education, an increase of $121 million over last year’s budget and the largest investment ever in Washington, DC. Earlier this month, Mayor Bowser announced a tentative agreement with the Washington Teachers Union that would add $110.5 million to DC public schools and $92.6 million to public charter schools in FY2017 – FY2021.
