Mayor Bowser Attends Grand Opening of Children’s Hospital Facility in Shanghai

Thursday, November 12, 2015
MOU extended between Shanghai Children’s Medical Center-Children’s National Health System, expanding partnership to support lifesaving pediatric health care and research

(Shanghai, China) – Today Mayor Muriel Bowser joined Dr. Kurt Newman, President and CEO of Children’s National Health System (CNHS), and Mr. Zhongyi Jiang, President of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center (SCMC) for the grand opening of the Pediatric Transitional Medical Joint Laboratory. The expanding partnership between CNHS and SCMS creates a new facility in Shanghai which expands pediatric cancer research and health care services. The event included the signing of a two-year extension of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the world-renowned organizations and expands their partnership on lifesaving pediatric health care and research.

“Access to quality health care is an important community asset in every corner of the globe,” said Mayor Bowser.  “Partnerships like the District-based Children’s National Health System and Shanghai Children’s Medical Center foster the opportunity for life-saving medical care, provider training and research to support our most important commodity – our children. I am proud to join this effort and confident that this alliance will have a positive, lasting impact on the health of future generations.”

The new laboratory facility will initially focus on oncology research, translating basic scientific findings into clinical and practical applications. Researchers will be able to travel back and forth between the DC and Shanghai institutions, working together on initiatives that will ultimately improve our understanding and treatment of pediatric diseases.

SCMC is affiliated with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, a tertiary pediatric hospital that provides medical care, scientific research and education. Covering an area of 17 acres, the hospital has a capacity of 500 designated medical beds.

The SCMC program was first designed in 1989 in partnership with the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and Project HOPE. Xinhua Hospital, founded in 1998, was responsible for the initial phase of establishing SCMC. Hillary Clinton, then First Lady of the United States, and Zuo Huanchen, former Vice Mayor of Shanghai, attended the opening ceremony. The establishment of SCMC represents the long-standing friendship between Shanghai and the US.

The CNHS is a world-leader in health care for children and are recognized for their innovative solutions to pediatric health challenges. Each year, more than 300,000 children receive care at CNHS.

The grand opening ceremony included a plaque unveiling to celebrate this partnership.

Mayor Bowser is currently leading a District delegation on an economic development mission in China that runs through November 14th. The delegation is focused on attracting additional foreign direct investment in the District, inviting Chinese companies to invest in DC’s underserved communities, and create new partnership agreements between DC and China-based institutions.
