Mayor Bowser Applauds President Biden on Rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement

Friday, February 19, 2021

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser applauded President Biden for his leadership in officially reentering the United States back into the Paris Climate Agreement and launching a whole-of-government approach to climate action. The District is also proud to join America Is All In, a national mobilization of more than 1,700 U.S. institutions working to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2050.

“The urgency to combat climate change is clear. We know that this is not just about preventing future catastrophe – it is also about recognizing and addressing the climate and humanitarian crises we are living with today. Washington, DC is proud to be one of the many U.S. jurisdictions that never wavered on keeping our commitment to the Paris Agreement. I am proud to say that under President Biden’s leadership, our nation is once again committed to addressing climate change and securing a sustainable future for our planet.”

During the Bowser Administration, DC has taken significant steps to cut carbon pollution and prepare for the effects of climate change. Since 2016, the District has been implementing Climate Ready DC, the District’s plan to adapt a changing climate, and Clean Energy DC, which charts DC’s pathway to cutting carbon emissions 50% by 2032. Most recently, in December 2020, Mayor Bowser joined a landmark pact to cut transportation pollution and invest in clean mobility and healthier communities. Currently, the District is developing Carbon Free DC, a strategy to meet our 2050 target of a healthy, equitable, prosperous, and carbon neutral city.
