Mayor Bowser Announces Appointment of Alana Intrieri as Director of the Office on Policy and Legislative Affairs

Friday, December 23, 2016

(WASHINGTON, DC) –  Today, Mayor Bowser announced the appointment of Alana Intrieri as Director of the Office on Policy and Legislative Affairs (OPLA) following the departure of Maia Hunt Estes, who will be leaving city government to serve as Chief of Staff to Maryland Congressman-Elect Anthony Brown after nearly two years with the Bowser Administration.

“Alana Intrieri brings extensive experience and crucial relationships with the Council. I am excited to have Alana continue serving my Administration and District residents in this new role, where she will build on the strong relationship with our partners on the Council,” said Mayor Bowser. “Since the beginning of my Administration, Maia Hunt Estes has played an integral role in advocating for our legislative priorities to create a safer, stronger DC, to build more pathways to the middle class and to improve services for residents in all eight wards. I cannot thank her enough for her service and wish her the best in her future endeavors.”

In 2016, Intrieri was appointed Deputy General Counsel for Mayor Bowser. At the Office of the General Counsel, Intrieri helped lead the team tasked with providing legal advice to the Mayor and the 20 agencies and offices in the Executive Office of the Mayor (EOM). As part of her role, Intrieri also supervised the successful transition of Freedom of Information Act processing for EOM to the Office of the General Counsel and dealt with a variety of Open Government issues as the Executive’s Open Government Officer.

Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel, Intrieri served as Special Counsel to Chairman Phil Mendelson at the Council of the District of Columbia. There, she worked on a broad range of policy issues, including a focus on issues related to homeless services. Before joining city government, Intrieri worked at several area non-profits and focused on issues related to the education of vulnerable and underserved children in Washington, DC.

Intrieri, a Ward 6 resident, earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pittsburgh and a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center.

Estes has served as the Director of OPLA since January 2015 where she helped to spearhead various Administration priorities through the DC Council. Prior to joining the Bowser Administration, Estes served as Chief of Staff of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland and was a practicing attorney.
