Service Project to Promote Mental and Nutritional Wellness for East of the River Residents

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Friday, November 17, at 2:45 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser will be joined by Cynthia Germanotta, Co-founder and President of Born This Way Foundation and mother of artist Lady Gaga, and Maya Enista Smith, Born This Way Foundation Executive Director, in a volunteer effort on behalf of “Joyful Food Markets,” a Martha’s Table monthly pop-up grocery store program. It provides healthy, non-perishable groceries and fresh produce to families in Wards 7 and 8.

In January 2015, in partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank, Martha’s Table launched Joyful Food Markets at four local elementary schools to reduce hunger and increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The markets are held once-a-month and is free to families with children enrolled to specific schools. Joyful Food Markets has grown to be made available at 21 elementary schools; and, will be in every public and charter elementary school in Wards 7 and 8 by 2018 – totaling 49 schools.
