(Washington, DC) – With the first Hypothermia Alert of the season going into effect at 7:00 p.m. this evening, Mayor Muriel Bowser is calling on residents to stay vigilant and to help their neighbors experiencing homelessness in need of shelter by calling the Shelter Hotline. You can request transportation for yourself of someone else by calling the Shelter Hotline at (202) 399-7093 or by dialing 311. If you believe there is an immediate medical emergency, please call 911.
The following low-barrier and seasonal shelters will be open: Adams Place (Men); 801 East (Men); New York Avenue (Men); Harriet Tubman (Women); Pat Handy Legacy (Men); Pat Handy Swing (Women); St. Josephine’s (Women); and Sherwood Recreation Center (Women).
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to fall towards the mid- to low-30s, remaining dry with wind chill values in the upper 20s. The Department of Human Services and the District’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) will activate the Hypothermia Alert from 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 15 through 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 16. If the alert is extended, an AlertDC notice will go out, a notice will be posted on the DHS website, at dhs.dc.gov, and information be available via in-person inquiries at open MPD stations, Fire and Emergency Medical Services stations, public libraries, and Department of Parks and Recreation recreation centers. The alert status is also sent out to individuals experiencing homelessness who have signed up for alerts via the HopeOneSource free text messaging app.
