(Washington, DC) – Today, the Bowser Administration and the Mayor’s Office on Caribbean Community Affairs (MOCCA) are celebrating the start of Caribbean Heritage Month and inviting community members to MOCCA’s signature Caribbean Heritage Month events, open to all Washingtonians. Throughout the month of June, MOCCA is partnering with community-based organizations to host events that will showcase the rich heritage of the Caribbean community across DC.
“Caribbean Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the resilience, creativity, and deep cultural pride that Caribbean people bring to the District and beyond,” said Natalee S. Snider, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office on Caribbean Community Affairs. “Our communities continue to shape the narrative of what it means to be American — through the arts, business, public service, and more. This month, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every Caribbean voice is heard, valued, and supported in Washington, DC.”
Since 2006, June has been designated as Caribbean American Heritage Month by presidential proclamation. The month-long observance promotes the rich culture and heritage of the Caribbean American people and their contributions to the United States of America. More than 80,000 Caribbean Americans call the DC area home, with vibrant, long-standing communities that have been rooted in Wards 4, 5, and 8 for generations.
