(Washington, DC) – This week, the Bowser Administration will host the third annual “Juneteenth in the District”— a powerful two-day event centered on mind, body, and community in commemoration of the Juneteenth holiday, which celebrates the formal end of slavery in the United States. Led by the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and taking place on Thursday, June 19 at Yards Park and Saturday, June 21 at Franklin Park, the event invites residents to honor the significance of Juneteenth through wellness experiences that promote health and embrace the national holiday.
“Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of freedom, and through movement we honor that legacy,” said DPR Director Thennie Freeman. “This two-day celebration with FITDC invites everyone to connect, reflect, and move together in the spirit of Black culture and liberation. We invite all residents to join us.”
The two-day event offers a powerful blend of movement, mindfulness, and culture, featuring some of the area’s top instructors. The celebration begins with an evening of relaxation, reflection, and a movie at Yards Park on Thursday, June 19. It continues at Franklin Park on Saturday, June 21, with a day full of line dancing, high-energy workouts, yoga, meditation, and a focus on Black health and wellness. Attendees are encouraged to wear their best country-style attire and come ready to move.
Both days are free and open to all residents. Participants will receive a free commemorative shirt on a first-come, first-served basis, as quantities are limited.
